Island of dreams We came on the Mayflower well the boat anyway ‘Cause we like to bring our stuff in the car To the island of dreams of retsina and ice cream And we meet the other Brits in the bar And we rise up early though we went to bed late The neighbours left some lemons and an egg on a plate And the sky is blue and the sea is warm And we can go swimming in the rose fingered dawn The house is quite Greek and we’re looking for antiques We like it how it used to be The floors aren’t quite flat and we seem to have a cat She came ‘cause the food was free And we sit on the terrace in the quiet velvet dark Sometimes if you’re lucky there’s a firefly spark And the ferry seems to float between the sky and the sea It’s a magical lightshow and it’s just for you and me England is drowning and China is too Half of Europes burning and there’s nothing we can do Africa’s starving America’s obese We never complain ‘cause it’s perfect here in Greece Hey Fanny Craddock why don’t you get in the kitchen If you think that the service is slow There’s plenty of wine and the company is fine We’re just going to go with the flow The red sun is sinking on the wine dark sea The Scops owls are tooting in the olive trees Don’t you come here moaning with your figures and facts We’ve come a thousand miles and we’re gonna relax We came on the Mayflower well the boat anyway ‘Cause we like to bring our stuff in the car To the island of dreams of retsina and ice cream And we meet the other Brits in the bar And we meet the other Brits in the bar.

Let’s Play House Come on Baby now let’s play house Let’s buy a place and slacken the pace Let’s leave behind the rat race Let’s play house When we came here on our holiday Things were perfect in every way Two weeks is good four weeks is better Let’s buy a place and stay here for ever Well the walls are sound but the roofs on the wane New beams and tiles will keep out the rain Nico from Albania will sort the whole deal With a home made ladder and a bicycle wheel Come on Baby now let’s play house Let’s become rulers of our own domain Let’s leave behind the cold and the rain Let’s play house Well we ended up big though we started out small With the terrace and the kitchen and the If you pay before it’s finished they’ll take you for a fool But you won’t get any visitors if you don’t have a pool Getting electricity will drive us frantic But the lanterns and candles are so romantic Let’s go for a swim and plant some flowers ‘Cause we’ll probably be dead before they turn on the power Come on Baby now let’s play house Get a room with a view of the ocean so blue Everybody loves Corfu Let’s play house With a little bit of help from Mr Syriotis We can double the mortgage, become Corfiotis I want to have a neighbour called Vassaliki With a climateria and an apothiki Come on Baby now let’s play house Let’s buy a place and slacken the pace Let’s rejoin the human race Let’s play house

The Loutses Song It was a hard time in Loutses in the winter of ninety one Ice on the vine, snow on the cactus and the builders didn’t come But it it was a hot one in ninety two I wore factor four to five, you wore seven to nine So let’s all go to Phillip’s bar and make a lot of noise I hope that man from Canada has brought a few good toys And the dancing girls will do their thing they’re the queens of rhapsody Singing about a donkey who died in eighty three With our Arab headgear we haven’t been burned yet The money we spent on suntan cream would service the national debt We got our cool bag and thermos we furnish them with stlyle The only thing we don’t have is a blow up crocodile Where the beach had disappeared Yani didn’t know He’s too busy fighting the war, the war of the pedallo And Yanula’s gonna born a baby, she’s lying in the shade Pedro’s busy with the concrete, getting that shelter made Amy found a tortoise and a baby one too With the kittens and the gecko and the tarantula Billy’s house looks like a zoo And I went down to see Costas, he hadn’t been to bed yet He’s still got the zeal to make another deal and Loose another gallon of sweat Lager lout he said to me – “Are you having fun ?” I said “How dare you We’ve been coming here since nineteen eighty one” Where are you John Stephens come back we do beseech Who’s gonna keep the Italians off our end of the beach And we’ll all go down to Kalamaki and there we’ll make our stand We’re gonna build Jerusalem In Corfu’s green and pleasant land.

Ruby Went A–Rowing Ruby went a-rowing in her own canoe Sophie came too, Carol had the flu Along came a big wave and Ruby “boo hooo” In the lovely island of Corfu Maddy built a castle with the runny sand Now she’s gonna live there wouldn’t that be grand The wide mouthed tree frog is gonna live there too In the lovely island of Corfu Steve he likes to sleep and Thelma likes to shop Down in Akaravi up in Cassiop Looking for a dream house gotta have a view In the lovely island of Corfu Mark he went exploring on the hill so green Looking for an angle to photograph the scene Got tangled in the brambles and now he’s in a stew In the lovely island of Corfu Emma’s getting ready to go out for the night Swapping clothes with Laura they’re such a lovely sight Calling on her mobile blatantly cool In the lovely island of Corfu John is getting hungry he’s looking for his tea Looking for the real thing authenticity All he needs now is a lactating ewe In the lovely island of Corfu

The Kalamaki Song Well the earth is the best, planet in the universe And Greece is the best country on the planet of the earth And Corfu is the best island in the land of Greece And Loutses is the best village on the island of Corfu But the very best place for the the human race And the very best beach you could ever reach is CHORUS Kalamaki-mou Kalamaki-sou Kalamaki-mou Mou arései Kalamaki-mou And on that beach washed by the blue blue sea Down at the end of lovely Kalamaki Is the biggest umbrella and a sandy tennis court And a eucalyptus tree and a blue and white fishing boat And sitting in a chair, in the very bright air Is the very best man and he doesn’t have a care CHORUS Costas and Annie at the centre of their universe Andreas and Brigitta, Nico, Vasso too And a beautiful grandchild too tiny to have a name And relatives and friends from around Corfu And the people who come every year to the sun And he loves all the people each and every one

about

These songs tell some stories about families and friends who have spent summers together in Corfu and takes a sometimes sideways look at our continuing love affair with the place, buying and restoring a house there. It is dedicated to all these fellow visitors and to all the people who have made us want to return there every year.
